Do You Dare?
Do you dare to embark on a journey that transcends all preconceived notions you have about you, your life, your wants, and your needs? A soul uncovering journey, across the ocean, miles away from home, from familiarities, coping mechanisms, and tried and true comforts; like your favorite coffee spot, your go-to comfort foods, your best friend’s sofa, or laying head to head with your sister in your childhood bed immersed in each other’s laughter? Do you dare to leave it all behind to seek out your truth, to follow a seed that for whatever reason happened upon your garden, and are you willing to uncover raw truths about yourself along the way that are accompanied by your “yes”?
In yelling my “yes” out to the universe, I’ve been met by my highest of highs and my lowest of lows. The romanticized zeal of wanderlust fades, and life sets in; finding a job, making new friends, learning a new language and a new culture all while maneuvering a foreign country. I’ve found that choosing to live a life in distance from all things I previously knew to be true has worn away at my otherwise thick New Yorker skin, leaving me to face all of my vulnerabilities, with old wounds surfacing to knock on my door without regard for an invitation. My thick skin, feeling warn, but in the same breath threaded back together by the kindness and gentle love of a loving partner, recent strangers that turned into family, toothy smiles, and a kind of contagious culture of openness that warrants you to open up a little bit more too. That’s the real wanderlust I think; finding your way as wherever you go there you are.
If you dare, I can warn you that the road abroad may be an equal parts tincture of fulfilling and lonely, and that it will be up to you to determine the recipe. I can say too that in the midst of the loneliness you can always feel your place in the grandness of this world because choices brought you here, making it clear that choices are always available to you, and even further that choices are always guiding you. Find comfort in that and the loneliness seems less lonely. Especially when you look up at the sky, or at the grand trees that are firmly rooted and stretch up to the sky, unafraid to take up space no matter where they are planted. I have personally found myself mesmerized by Italian Stone Pine trees more than I care to admit for this reason. Be like the trees wherever and if ever you decide to uproot and replant yourself. And when you forget your strength on the tough days away from everything you know, let them lend you the strength you need to ground yourself in what feels good.
If you dare to uproot, you dare to grow where you are planted. So gritty of you! And in turn, you might just learn that the journey is not about the destination at all, but the self discoveries to be uncovered along the way.
If you too said “yes” like me or are thinking about it, I would love to hear your story.
