Who’s on your leaderboard these days? Meaning who do you find yourself comparing yourself to? There’s one craft I have recently taken up that consistently serves me up a real nice slice of humble pie in the leaderboard sector ~ boxing. I started a consistent practice in January 2019 and it quickly became my sanctuary, free therapy, and my course in Mindfulness 101. Gloving up and locking in, you start to see that the only real battle that you will ever face in this lifetime is the person staring back at you in the mirror. It’s you vs. you, essentially, you vs. the thoughts that you choose.
When you realize it’s you vs. you, you’re able to see that you, my dear, are more powerful than you think. You icks-nay the leaderboard with all those people that you put on a pedestal before yourself for your own reasons, and you start to see that you’re only up against the person you were yesterday, a few minutes ago, even a few seconds ago.
In this sense, boxing has taught me to stay out of my own way. Meaning, that everytime I tell myself I can’t do something, I am able to see that the only thing holding me back is myself. In some of my most vulnerable moments, I have literally visualized tapping myself on the shoulder and moving myself out of the way. Like “hey, ‘scuse me.. we don’t have time for that”. Holy cannoli is there power in this visualization, and I encourage you to try it the next time self-doubt creeps in.
When you visualize yourself stepping out of your own way, and tell yourself that worry and fear have no place there - it’s freeing, and well, free, as anyone has this power at any given time.
For all of my ladies on here, I will say that boxing isn’t just for the Laila Ali’s out there. It’s a trifecta pursuit that encompasses mind, body, and spirit, and it’s for anyone. If you’re looking to try something new in 2020, pick up some gloves and get to the bag. With every jab cross and every stick and move, you are up against your only real component out there~ You (and big secret, you’re the only champ in your ring).
Your You vs. You practice might not look like boxing. Where do you find yourself most at peace, most in-tune with you?
Remember, there’s only space for one #1 on your leaderboard, and that’s you.
Xx, Sab
